Sydney to Hobart
Our Sydney to Hobart sail may look a little like this.
The sail is approximately 750nm with stopovers along the NSW, Tasmanian coast and the magnificent islands of the Kent (Deal Island) and Furneaux (Flinders Island) Group.
The route will be planned based on the weather and suitable harbours, islands and anchorages available for the prevailing conditions. The sail will be a combination of day sails and overnight sails to cover greater distances. There will be rest days where possible to enjoy some of the magnificent anchorages along the way.
For those wishing to complete their RYA practical sailing, there will opportunities throughout the sail where we will complete the course syllabus (eg: Crew Overboard practice).
Please note, for safety and comfort of our sail, routes and anchorages will be altered to suit our variables – weather and tide.
Day One
Welcome aboard and safety briefing.
- Berthing practice and settling aboard on Fika.
- Sail on the harbour
- Anchor overnight in Watsons Bay
Day Two
Watsons Bay to Jervis Bay
- Depart 0500 and sail to Jervis Bay
- Anchor overnight Darling Road, Jervis Bay.
- Distance: 95nm
Day Three
Depart Jervis Bay to Twofold Bay Eden.
- Distance: 120nm
Day Four
Arrive Eden
- We will either anchor, pick up a public mooring or tie alongside the Eden wharf. There will be time to go ashore and explore the town.
- Take some time to go ashore and explore the town.
Day Five
Sail Eden to Deal Island
- The sail will take us along the Victorian coast, close to Gabo Island and into Bass Strait. We will be passing through the oil rigs off the East Gippsland coast.
- Distance: 200nm
Day Six
En route to Deal Island
- Estimated Time of Arrival in the afternoon. Enter the Murray Pass and find a protected anchorage within the Pass at Deal, Dover or Erith Island.
Day Seven
Rest Day - Deal Island
- Anchor overnight
- Walk up to the Deal Island lighthouse and explore this spectacular island; meet the caretakers and local wallabies.
Day Eight
Sail Deal Island to Killiecrankie Bay, Flinders Island.
- Anchor in the Bay.
- Distance: 35nm
- Enjoy a Beach walk
Day Nine
Sail to Whitemark and anchor for lunch.
- Stroll through the town before sailing onto Trousers Bay, Flinders Island.
- Distance: 30nm
- Pick up the public mooring.
Day Ten
Rest Day Flinders Island.
- Beach comb, walk the coastal path along Trousers Point or climb the Strzelecki Peak.
Day Eleven
Depart Trousers Bay, Flinders Island
- Sail through the Banks Strait, down the East coast of Tasmania towards Wineglass Bay.
- Distance: 125nm
Day Twelve
Arrive Wineglass Bay.
- Anchor and spend time ashore walking along the beach or climb the stairs to the lookout for a fantastic view of our anchorage.
Day Thirteen
Depart Wineglass Bay.
- Sail from Wineglass Bay, through Schouten Passage and on to Maria Island.
- Anchor overnight Shoal Bay.
- Go ashore and meet the local residents, the wombats.
- Distance: 40nm
Day Fourteen
Sail Maria Island to Port Arthur
- This part of the coast is spectacular with dolerite cliffs unique to Tasmania. Weather permitting, we will pass between Tasman Island and Cape Pillar.
- Anchor Port Arthur
- Distance: 50nm
Day Fifteen
Port Arthur
- Enjoy an early rise and explore the historic Port Arthur site
- Sail up Storm Bay and the Derwent.
- Berth at a marina Hobart
- Distance: 45nm
