What To Expect

The ICC is a certificate is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries. The ICC is an internationally recognised qualification.

It is issued under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee Working Party on Inland Water Transport Resolution No. 40. The ICC, or higher certification, is required in most European countries where governments are increasingly looking for recognised certificates to confirm the student reaches an internationally agreed level of competence.

The ICC has 5 categories including Inland Waters, Coastal Waters, Power, Sail and Personal Watercraft. When an ICC is issued, only the categories for which competence has been demonstrated will be validated.

Course syllabus

Complete or show evidence of completion of an RYA practical course
(minimum Day Skipper), or;
Experienced skippers can also qualify for the ICC by successfully completing an assessment of their competence through an RYA Recognised Training Centre.

The course involves both a theoretical and practical component and takes approximately up to 8 hours.
