Training Info

Duration: Self paced

Delivery: E-Learning, Virtual Assessment

What To Expect

By law, a ships station (VHF or HF radio) should only be operated by a person holding a current marine radio operator certificate of proficiency.

The Long Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) qualification allows the operator to operate both the VHF and MF/HF radio. The Short Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) allow the operator to operate VHF radio.

Both the SROCP and LROCP are offered in 3 easy steps:

  1. Complete the E-Learning online modules with Above and Beyond Boating;

  2. Book in for the assessment which involves both an online multiple choice exam and a practical skills assessment via video call (Above and Beyond Boating) or to be arranged in person (with Paper Sailors Rock);

  3. Pay the ‘licence’ fee to Office of Maritime Communications (OMC) to receive your Operators Certificate of Proficiency.

You will learn:

  • How radios work
  • How to send Distress Urgency and Safety Communications
  • Power supply
  • Digital Selective Calling
  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio beacons (EPIRB)
  • Search and rescue transponders
  • Search and rescue in Australia
  • Operating procedures for routine communications
