Service Description

By law, a ships station (VHF or HF radio) should only be operated by a person holding a current marine radio operator certificate of proficiency.

The Long Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) qualification allows the operator to operate both the VHF and MF/HF radio. The Short Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) allow the operator to operate VHF radio.

This 1 day course includes classroom and practical activities as well as the exam which is independently marked by the Office of Maritime Communications to receive your SROCP or LROCP.

Additional fees are required for the examination, approximately $89. However, the Marine Radio Operators Handbook is included.

You will learn:

  • How radios work
  • How to send Distress Urgency and Safety Communications
  • Power supply
  • Digital Selective Calling
  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio beacons (EPIRB)
  • Search and rescue transponders
  • Search and rescue in Australia
  • Operating procedures for routine communications
