Safety and Sea Survival

Australian Sailing accredited Safety and Sea Survival

The Australian Sailing Safety and Sea Survival (SSSC) course involves completing online elearning modules and practical exercises in the use of liferafts, inflatable lifejackets, and distress flares. The online modules can be completed in your own time and at your own pace with access to the course material for 12 months.  An online certificate will be issued once completed. This is your ‘ticket’ to complete the practical. The practical course is delivered over one day and is facilitated by a Safety and Sea Survival Instructor. The practical pool exercises will be conducted within a heated swimming pool.

You will gain a Safety and Sea Survival Qualification Certificate as required for Category 1 and Category 2 races. This certificate is valid for 5 years from the date of the course.

Paper Sailors Rock offers both the Full Course and Refresher Course (for those who have completed the SSSC in the last 5 years).

FAQs

Completing your SSSC with Paper Sailors Rock will involve completing online learning modules and practical activities. The classroom component will be held at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS). The practical activities, which will involve deploying a liferaft and swimming in a pool, will take place at a local aquatic facility. You will be emailed more information one month prior to the commencement of the course.

It is important to bring a Personal Floatation Device (PFD), and a full set of wet weather gear, including mid-layers and boots. If you do not have these, it is possible to hire a PFD from Paper Sailors Rock. If you do not have wet weather gear, it is recommended to wear waterproof pants and a jacket (for example; hiking, or snow gear) and tracksuit pants, a fleece top and sneakers. The rationale for this is to mimic an abandoned ship where you would be fully clothed.

The SSSC certificate is valid for 5 years. It is then possible to complete the 1 day refresher course. However, if it has been more than 5 years it is recommended to complete the full course again.

Whilst it is mandatory to complete the SSSC for some category races, it is highly recommended that all sailors going to sea, complete the SSSC, to ensure that you are prepared for any situation.

To inspire, share knowledge, enable and create memorable, quality sailing experiences which are inclusive of all and respectful of the environment.
